While blood tracking dogs are undeniably valuable, our specialized pheromone tracking dogs offer a distinct advantage in wounded game recovery. Here’s why:

  • Invisible Trails: A wounded animal doesn’t always leave a clear blood trail. Internal injuries, small caliber wounds, or even the animal’s natural instinct to conceal its vulnerability can result in minimal or no blood sign. Pheromone tracking transcends this limitation, as it allows our dogs to follow the unique scent “fingerprint” every animal leaves behind, regardless of blood.
  • Extended Tracking Time: The scent of blood can deteriorate quickly, especially in adverse weather conditions. Pheromones, however, linger much longer, enabling our dogs to successfully track wounded game even hours or days after the initial injury.

1. Mark the Spot!

  • Precisely mark the location of the shot. Use GPS coordinates, landmarks, high visibility flagging tape, or even use toilet paper to mark the hit sight.
  • Note the last known location and direction of travel. Observe which way the animal ran and any noticeable features of its movement (limping, stumbling, etc.).
  • Mark any blood trails or signs. If you find blood, mark the beginning and any blood of the trail with high visibility flagging tape or toilet paper, being careful not to disturb the trail itself.

2. Don’t Bump It!

  • Back out and give the animal time to expire. Pushing a wounded animal will only increase its adrenaline and cause it to run further, making recovery more difficult. Waiting allows the animal to bed down and potentially succumb to its injuries.

3. Gather Information:

  • Note the time of the shot. This helps to determine at what time the dog should search based on the location of the shot.
  • Assess the shot placement and possible injuries. Be honest about where you aimed and the type of reaction the animal had. This information helps the tracker run the dog.
  • Be prepared to describe any other information or details to the tracker that you believe may be important.

4. Contact the Tracker ASAP:
